When people talk about the artificial-intelligence side of Qlik, the same name almost always comes up: Qlik Answers. It’s the piece that brings generative AI into the day-to-day of the business user. And its big difference from other tools is where it looks for answers: not only in your tables, but also in your documents.
Qlik Answers in one sentence
Qlik Answers is a generative-AI assistant that responds to questions asked in natural language using your organisation’s knowledge sources, returning a written answer along with the sources it is based on. Instead of opening a dashboard and navigating, you type your question and get a direct answer, with links to the source document or data.
What sets it apart: unstructured data
Most BI tools answer well over structured data (tables, metrics, dimensions). The real value of Qlik Answers is that it also works with unstructured data: PDF manuals, internal documentation, wikis, notes, contracts, support tickets… all that knowledge that normally lives outside the data warehouse and that nobody manages to exploit.
That’s the gap it fills: it turns mountains of documents into a source you can ask, just as you’d ask a colleague who has read everything.
How it works under the hood
Without going into too much technical detail, the flow is this:
- You connect your knowledge sources (document repositories, databases, internal sites).
- Qlik Answers indexes that content and prepares it for semantic search.
- When someone asks, the system retrieves the most relevant fragments and a language model drafts the answer from them.
- The answer arrives with citations of where each statement came from, so you can verify it.
This is the pattern known in the industry as RAG (retrieval-augmented generation): the model doesn’t make things up, it answers from your documents.
It’s not a generic chatbot
Here’s the key difference from asking the same thing of a consumer AI:
- It answers over your data, not the internet.
- It cites its sources, so the answer is auditable.
- It respects permissions: each user only gets answers from information they are allowed to see. Security is not optional.
That last point is what makes Qlik Answers viable in a company, not just a nice demo.
Where it fits: Answers, Insight Advisor and the agents
It helps to place Qlik Answers within Qlik’s AI ecosystem:
- Qlik Answers shines with unstructured knowledge (documents) and questions like “what does the policy say about…?”.
- Insight Advisor and the associative engine handle the classic structured analysis: figures, trends and comparisons over your data models.
- On top of that, Qlik brought its agentic experience to general availability on Qlik Cloud (February 2026), adding a Discovery Agent that watches metrics and an MCP Server to connect external AI agents to governed Qlik data.
They don’t compete: they complement each other. You can read more about this shift in our article on agentic analytics.
Real-world use cases
- Support and customer service: answer instantly by searching manuals and knowledge bases.
- Onboarding: let a new hire ask “how do we do X here?” and get the answer with the document attached.
- Compliance and legal: find out what policies, contracts or regulations say without reading everything.
- Sales: look up product sheets, terms and case studies in seconds.
What you need to get started
- Being on Qlik Cloud.
- Connecting the right knowledge sources (and only those).
- Data and permissions in order: defining what content is indexed and who can see what.
This last point is what separates a useful deployment from a dangerous one.
What it does NOT solve (honestly)
- It doesn’t fix bad knowledge. If your documents are out of date or contradictory, the answers will be too.
- It doesn’t replace judgement. It cites sources precisely so a person can validate what matters.
- It’s not free to govern. It requires deciding what gets indexed, maintaining the content and controlling access.
As with any AI project over data, 80% of the value is in preparing the sources well. That’s why we insist so much on data governance.
At Digital Fox Data we help you roll out Qlik’s AI with confidence: connecting and governing the sources, defining security and training your users. Discover our Qlik consulting and our Qlik courses, or let’s talk about how to make the most of Qlik Answers in your organisation.
